2005 Summer Sermon Series on Creation Versus Evolution:

The ongoing debate between creation and evolution is often presented as a struggle between the Bible and science, leading many people to believe that to have one, you can't have the other. A person who believes God created as the Bible says, for example, must not be scientific. A person who believes that all life evolved from a common ancestor, therefore, must not care about the Bible.

But the main difference between the two is the starting point. An evolutionist starts with an assumption that life created itself looks at the facts to find evidence in support of his viewpoint. A creationist starts with the assumption that God created and also looks at the facts to find evidence in support of his viewpoint.

This series of messages shows how these two starting points yield such different interpretations of the same evidence.

For example:

•
Are the many different species of animals evidence of one common ancestor or evidence of variety within original created kinds?
•
Are "pre-human" remains really so different from us, or do their characteristics fit with modern humans?
•
Do fossils tell the story of slow species development over hundreds of millions of years or rapid, catastrophic burial in a short time?
•
Are natural wonders like the Grand Canyon a result of a little water over a long time or a lot of water in a short time?
•
Did dinosaurs really die out 65 million years ago, or did they live much more recently?
•
Do different races of humans mean different evolutionary tracks, or are they descended from the same ancestors?

In addition to touching on the above points (and many others), Genesis 1 - 11 also helps us struggle with questions like:

•
Why do bad things happen in this world, and whose fault is it?
•
What is the definition of a Biblical marriage?
•
Can it be possible that early humans could live nearly 1000 years?
•
How old is the earth?
•
Is there enough water for a global flood?
•
Were the first people vegetarian?
•
Was there death before sin?
•
Has God done anything to help human beings escape this fallen world?
•
And much, much more!
